Schmidt Academy for Software Engineering Call for Graduate Research Fellowships
Deadline: 15 Oct. 2024
The Software Academy is offering fellowships for graduate students developing new software as part of their thesis, allowing graduate students to spend six months to one year entirely focused on software development under the mentorship of academy senior engineers.
This will facilitate software development using best industry practices for code health, robustness, portability, and scalability, and thereby accelerating scientific discovery.
The fellowships are open to existing students in any option who have passed their qualifying exams and in which new software is an integral component of their thesis research. The Academy provides 2/3 of support with the balance from the student’s research group. The student will also participate in academy activities: A weekly meeting with the entire academy, regular meetings with a senior Academy engineer (mentor), and enrollment in CS130, if they haven’t already done so. Fellowship support could start as early as Fall, 2024.
For those interested in submitting proposals, further information on the academy can be found at: https://sase.caltech.edu/
A 1-2 page proposal should include: (1) summary of the thesis topic and scope; (2) description of the new software and it’s relation to the thesis; (3) current status of the software; (4) how best practices in software engineering could enhance the viability of the software; and (5) thoughts on the future use and impact of the software.
Students should arrange for a letter of reference from their thesis advisor which should include: (1) their commitment towards 1/3 of the student’s stipend and (2) that the student will be able to participate in academy activities (~1 hour per week) and meet regularly with their Academy mentor.
Specific questions can be addressed to Professor Mike Gurnis (gurnis@caltech.edu).
Proposals and reference letters should be submitted by email to sase@caltech.edu by Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024.
